Maryland Health Insurance

MarylandIn Maryland, the Maryland Insurance Administration of Baltimore regulates state law regarding health insurance.  As in all states, you can get your Maryland health insurance through your employer or through an individual health insurance plan.  If you’re exploring your Maryland health insurance needs, it’s important to make sure that you know your rights when it comes to Maryland health insurance law and the availability of affordable health insurance plans within the state.

Maryland Health Care Coverage

One of the most recent breakthroughs in Maryland health insurance occurred in the Spring of 2008 when it became state law that children up to the age of 25 would be covered under their parents’ plans.

Previously, this number had been 19, and if the child is a full-time student, the age limit is increased to 23.  A study done by the state showed that one out of every seven or eight Maryland residents aged 21 to 25 were uninsured.  Further research showed that these young adults were not uninsured because they wanted to be – the vast majority applied for group health insurance through their employer when it was offered.  The problem instead was that these young adults often did not have jobs with benefits and were part-time students or low-income residents and not making enough money to afford good health insurance.

By increasing the age limit to 25, those who want Maryland health insurance have a few extra years to find a job that offers health insurance or save up for coverage.  Maryland health insurance can be expensive for individuals, but by age 25, it is estimated that many of the current uninsured young adults will be making enough money to afford it or will have employers who offer it.

Luckily, if your employer doesn’t offer health insurance coverage and you’ve been denied traditional coverage, there are a number of state-run plans that might be able to help you. The following are medical insurance programs from the state of MD:
