Nebraska Health Insurance
Nebraska health insurance can save you from financial disaster should you need medical care. However, choosing a plan for medical insurance in this state can be difficult if you don’t understand Nebraska health insurance law. This state offers a number of options, so as a resident, you should learn about your options to find the best choice for you.
Health Insurance in Nebraska
Just like in all states, there are two main choices for health insurance in NE. First, you can get your health insurance through your employer. This is a good option, but is not available for all adults. Studies show that two in every five working adults in this state do not have Nebraska health insurance. That’s 40% of the workforce that’s not covered!
Why?
Well, if your employer has a small number of employees or if you work part time, they do not have to offer health care benefits to you. If this is the case, you’re on your own – and individual Nebraska health insurance plans can be expensive.
If you have a preexisting condition, it will be even harder to find health insurance through an individual policy. In Nebraska, there are no limits as to how much an insurance company can charge, so you might find that your premiums are extremely high if you have do in fact have a prior medical condition.
This is due, in part, to mandated benefits required in Nebraska. Mandated benefits are those that must be included with all Nebraska health insurance plans. Some of the required benefits include;
- diabetes care,
- mammograms, and
- emergency care.
In addition, in this state, there is a “guaranteed renewability” law, which states that your health insurance policy can’t be canceled if you get sick or sustain a long-term injury. Unless you stop paying your premium, your health insurance cannot be canceled. Keep in mind that this law only affects permanent health insurance plans. If you have a temporary health insurance plan, you may not be covered under the guaranteed renewability law.
If you’ve been trying to get individual health insurance and are worried about affordability, the state runs a number of low-cost programs and there are private low-income insurance plans as well.
