Tennessee Auto Insurance
Tennessee auto insurance is a requirement for all motorists within the state who wish to drive on the state’s public roads. TN is considered an ‘at fault’ state or ‘tort’ state meaning that in any auto related accident, blame must be assigned to 1 party involved.
This effects auto insurance in Tennessee due to the level of compensation that your auto insurance carrier will have to provide (on your behalf) based on the tort system rules of assigning fault. The required auto insurance in TN applies only to liability but it is highly recommended that you carry more insurance to cover other loss/damage.
Tennessee Auto Insurance Requirements
The state has set minimum coverages for bodily injury and property damage for liability coverage.
- Property Damage: $10,000 minimum coverage to cover 1 accident.
- Bodily Injury:
- $25,000 for injury or death of 1 person.
- $50,000 for injury or death of all people involved in an accident.
Other Tennessee Auto Insurance Information
Tennessee has what’s referred to as a Financial Responsibility law (T.C.A.,55-12-139) that allows the state to suspend your drivers license, vehicle registration and even put a STOP on registration renewal (section 55-12-139) if you fail to provide proof of insurance when requested.
Proof can be an insurance card or a binder or declaration page (from an insurance company authorized to do business in Tennessee), stating that a policy of insurance meeting the requirements of the Tennessee Financial Responsibility Law are in effect for you; or a certificate from the Department of Safety noting that a cash deposit or bond has been posted in the amount required by the Tennessee Financial Responsibility Law.
Penalties for violating the financial responsibility law are strictly enforced and harsh. You’ll want to ensure that you carry at least the minimum coverages required by the state AND that you have the proper proof with you.
