Virginia auto insurance is required if you plan on driving your automobile on public roads and highways within the state of VA. Alternatively the state does provide a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee option that will still allow you to legally register your vehicle and drive on the public highways and roads. It does NOT insure you or your vehicle in any way, and you will be personally liable for any monetary damages you cause on the roadways. The $500 fee is merely administrative.

The state requires all motorists to carry a minimum amount of liability auto insurance. The minimum requirements are listed below:

- For 2 or more people- bodily injury or death $50,000
- Basic property damage is $20,000
